The Open Championship returns to Royal Troon between the 18th and 21st July 2024. But who is the favourite in the only major held outside of America?
On July 18th, major golf returns to the UK as The Open Championship is hosted for 152nd edition of the competition.
156 golfers will take part, all looking to get their hands on the Claret Jug as well as their cut of the prize money of $16,500,000!
The current Open champion is Brian Harman. He won by sic shots in 2023 finishing the weekend 13 under par!

Open Championship Tips
As of now, Rory McIlroy is considered a favourite to win the Open Championship in 2024. He has been set as the early betting favourite by various sports betting sites.
It’s easy to see why as he is on great form and the type of course, links golf, is his bread and butter.
He won this tournament back in 2014 but his best finish since was tied second in 2018. Despite boasting 24 PGA Tour wins in his career, he doesn’t have a consistent record in this particular golf major.
In fact, there’s a really good chance his odds will drift as we get closer to the event so it might be a good idea to delay placing bets on him right now.
Spanish golfer, John Rahm, finished 2022 fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings but has since climbed a couple of places and is now third in the world.
Add in a decent tied-second place in the Open Championship, along with four PGA tour wins in 2023, and his odds look like great value.
American Scottie Scheffler is the world’s number golfer and winner of the 2023 Players Championship.
Winner of the Masters in 2022, odds on Scheffler winning pretty much any tournament are low, and the Open Championship 2024 is no different.
That said, he has never performed particularly well at the Open so will need to dig deep in 2024 to add it to his list of growing accolades.
The Open Championship Prize Money
Of course we all want to know how much the winner takes home, but like most golf tournaments, it’s not exactly straightforward.
The prize package is made up of multiple things including trophies, money and exemptions from future golf tournaments.
- The Golf Champion Trophy – the Claret Jug
- The winner’s gold medal
- If the winner is a professional, then the winner’s share (18%) of the purse.
- Guaranteed entry to all future Open Championships until the age of 60
- Entry to the next ten Opens, even if over the age of 60
- Entry to the next five editions of the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, and U.S. Open
- Five year hip to the PGA Tour and the European Tour
- Official World Golf Ranking points
There are other guaranteed entries but basically, the Open Championship winner gets invited to everything!
You may also have noticed the winner takes a percentage of the overall cash prize. So for 2023 that fund was $16,500,500.
That means that Brian Harman won 18% which is $2,970,000. The more the prize increase, the more the winner gets.

The Open Championship was first held in 1860 and is the last of the four major championships to be played each year.
The championship is held on a different course each year and from the 14 courses that have been used since 1860, nine are still in the current rota.

As we know Royal Troon will host the Open Championship in 2024.
